New England Home Cleaning Must-Dos: Summer Edition

We might be biased, but summers in New England are the best. We have more than six hundred thousand acres of conservation land to explore on long walks, hikes, or camping trips. There are countless beaches, rivers, lakes and ponds to cool down. Many of them are just a few minutes’ drive from Boston and other popular cities or towns. Summer is one of the best times to explore the iconic Freedom trail, which connects tons of historic sites and landmarks dating back to the birth of our country.  As a distinct season of the year, however, summer comes with its list of chores for New England homeowners. In our book, a deep clean is always a great place to start.

Since we are in the business of home cleaning in and around the Greater Boston area, we are sharing three home cleaning must-dos here in New England, and why they’re so important in the summertime.

    1) Patios & outdoor spaces

Summers are for bbqs, outdoor game nights, and impromptu gatherings. There’s nothing like spending time with your friends and loved ones in your backyard with some sunshine and a crisp drink in hand. With the increase in gatherings, you’re going to want to make sure your space is clean and in good shape all summer long. After all, you don’t exactly want to attract any unwanted pests to the party.

Regularly sweeping and power washing or hosing down cement, wood plank, or tile flooring will help prevent sticky residue from building up. You can use our DIY method to deep clean cement floors! Wipe down tables and chairs and launder cushions to keep *visitors* away. Empty and deep clean trash and recycling receptacles often to avoid accumulation. Set up insect traps or bait stations to keep ants and other creepy crawlies away from the fun.

Have a big gathering or family event taking place in your backyard this summer? Gift yourself an extra set of hands! We offer deep cleaning services for outdoor spaces all throughout the Boston and Boston proper areas.

    2) Grill & outdoor cooking space/surface

This might seem like a no-brainer, but grills and outdoor cooking spaces are prime nesting locations for rodents and other pests. This is especially true during the cold weather months. Be sure to deep clean your grill at the start of the season- even if it is kept indoors in a shed or garage in the winter.

    3) Walls

This should be on everyone’s spring and summer deep cleaning routine, but walls can be easy to forget about. They don’t stand out as a place where messes are made. However, collectively they form the biggest surface in our home. We come into contact with them everyday. From being used as railings for support to bumping against them as we turn corners, our walls are used all day long. During the summer especially, rising and lowering humidity levels can create moisture on our walls. It’s important to prevent them from becoming a breeding ground for germs and residue build-up.

There are a few different ways to deep clean walls, especially in hard to reach areas  (stay tuned!), but nothing beats a good ol’ sponge and soapy water. A great tip if you have children is to be sure to get down to your children’s level and focus on those areas. That is where your walls will likely need the most attention!

All in all, a cleaner, tidier home helps to deal with the seasonal challenges we face in the New England area. Follow along as we continue to share tips and tricks to keeping your home safe and clean– the Greenly way!
